An unusual case, the first of its kind in North Auckland, was heard at the Waipu court yesterday, when Frederick Brooks was charged, under section 24 of the Child Welfare Act Amendment,: 1927, of having unlawful intercourse with a girl, a ward of the Slate, licensed to the accused's wife for domestic- duties. The girl was stated to be ail expectant mother. The magistrate, Mr. Norris, stressed, the fact that the drastic nature of the penal clause was not generally known, and requested wide publicity in order to emphasise the serious character of the offence. Brooks having, made a frank admission of the fact, and the proceedings being probably unique, was let off lightly with a fine of £ls FOUND ASLEEP IN CAR, WELLINGTON, Aug. 13. After attending a function at the Officers’ Oluib in honour of the officers of the French cruiser, Charles Stanley Clark was found in his ear a (sleep in an intoxicated condition, and with another man also under the influence of liquor, and was arrested. It was explained in court that Clark had realised that lie was not in a condition to drive and had therefore decided to rest in the car, huthad fallen asleep. The magistrate- thought that a- fine would meet the case and imposed a fine of £2O.
