Mr Clutha M-ackenzie, director of the Jubilee Institute for the- Blind, left Auckland' on Monday eii route to England. He will be absent from theDominion about eight months. Mr R. P- J. Ray, who was for 40 years in the service of the Auckland Education Board, for many years as assistant secretary; died at Bristol on Tuesday, states a Press Association telegram from Auckland. M. G. Mironescu, the Roumanion Foreign Minister, arrived in London on Wednesday evening, states an official wireless message. In view of the generosity of Mr and Mrs C. H. Burgess and their continued interest in the work of the ( Choral Society in New Plymouth, they have been elected the first life members of the society. Congratulations were extended to Mr T. P. Hughson, of R.atotu, at the Opunake Methodist circuit meeting on "Wednesday, on the honour done-. to him and the district in being appointed vice-president, of the church of the Dominion. Lieutenants R. R. Henderson and J. W. Bolton, of the Hawera town cadet company, have been awarded the 12 years’ long service- medal. They have been requested to attend the Anzac Day parade at New Plymouth to receive the presentation of the medals. Mr R. A. G. Fowke, stationmaster at Hawera, is at present on his annual leave, which he is spending in the South Island with Mrs. Fowke and family. During his absence Mr. R, Campbell, of the local staff, is acting as stationmaster.

Bear-Admiral Frederic C. Dreyer,, 0.8., C.8.E., has been promoted to the rank of vice-admiral. Vice-Ad-miral Drover was chief of staff to Lord Jeliico© and was in New Zealand with Lord Jei'k'icoe’is naval tour in 1919. In 1915 ha joined! the Iron Duke as flagcaptain to Sir John Jellicoe. In the admiral’s despatch on Jutland he said that Captain Dreyer “commanded and handled the fleet flagship most ably.” Since May, 1927, he has been, rearadmiral commanding the battle-cruiser squadron. The Gazette last night announced the appointment of the following, justices of the peace: Alexander Winlus, Bulls; John Thomas. Boswqrtli, Palmerston North; Alfred Henry Burgess, Waikanae; George Gibson, Rahotu; William Henry Gimblett, Mangawhata; James Perfect Laird, Wanganui; Angus Edward Mansford, Palmerston N.; Thomas Templeton Murray, Stratford: Ernest Edward Porritt, Wanganui; Percy Vernon Esmond Stainton, New Plymouth; William Wright Thomason, New Plymouth; Samuel Vickers, New Plymouth.
