.SOUTH TARANAKI TOURNEY. THE FINAL. Much interest was taken in the last stages of the South Taranaki bowling tourney, held on the Hawera green yesterday when semi-finals and final were played, the play being watched by a- large number of spectators. The personnel or the rinks was as lollows: Thames. —Pratt, Whitehead, Delamore, Adamsou. Hawera. —Cropton, Janson, Maslin, M. J. Squire. Thames went off with the lead, but Hawera with a good four and a single evened matters up, and it was eight ad at the seventh head. Thames again drew ahead, and then Hawera put on a solid live and led by four points. Then for five heads Hawera stood still, while Thames with singles and three twos went to 19, and then Hawera got a single and a fine four. Thames still kept the lead, scoring two, one each oit the next two heads, and at the nineteenth they led by lour. In the next the fortunes varied very much, Thames, by good play on the- part of the lead and second, lay three, when Janson took one out. Again Whitehead added one, which Maslin cut out. Adamson drew another and lay three. Squire tried two drives and cut one out, and the head ended with the score 25—19 in favour of Thames.

In the last the Thames lead was short, and Cropton with his second carried one- to lie the shot. When the skips went back Thames were lying four. Adamson did not improve, and Squire with a strong drive took out. two and just failed to get kitty with his second, and the match ended with the score 27 —19. PRESENTATIONS.

In making the presentations to the winners, iUr J. l'oy, president of tne centre, congratulated them on their consistent play, and said the- tourney had been very successful despite the somewhat unpropitious weather conditions. The play fiad been good tnroughout, and had been contested in the best sporting spirit. The winning rink came from an outside centre, and had played well throughout and thoroughly deserved its success. It was, tie understood, its first win at a tourney. The president also congratulated the runners-up. Mr Pratt said they had all enjoyed their visit, and did n-ot regret at all travelling on this their first visit to South Taranaki. He reminded bowlers that one of the greatest gains made by these tours was the feeling of - camaraderie engendered and the mak- [ ing of new friendships. They were, be I added, proud of their skip and glad to ; play with him. He thanked local bowlers for their hospitality, and said they hoped to come again to the t-ourney. Mr Squire briefly returned thanks for the complimentary remarks of the president, and heartily congratulated the winners. Lusty cheers were exchanged, and three cheers were given also, for the ladies. HAWERA CLUB COMPETITIONS. BISOX CUP. The four players left in the contest for the Bisox Cup were Ren wick (two lives), A. E. Wills, J. Eoy and Corkill. Yesterdav Wills beat- Fov 21 to 8. C’orkill has to play Wills, and the winner will be matched against Renwick. VETERANS’ DAY. An interesting bowling event will take place in New Plymouth to-day, when there will ho a gathering of veterans, all over 65 yeans of age, for their annual match. A. number of Hawera bowlers went north this morning to take part in the proceedings. NELSON TOURNEY. I r.y Telegraph—Press Association. > NELSON, April 2.
