STATE SERVICE AND UNEMPLOYMENT,. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, April 1. O'n the motion of Mr F. R. Cooke, secretary for Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., the Labour conference to-day affirmed that the wise and efficient, administration of the public services of the Dominion will give a better return no the community than the same type of service under private enterprise. The conference pledged the party to oppose all efforts that may be made to retard or handicap local body or State organisations that are jiroviding services or supplying goods at less cost than they have been supplied or can be supplied by the private trader. The evening session, was. mainly devoted to n discussion <m the subject of organising work throughout the Dominion. Arising out of the New Zealand Labour Party executive’s report upon the subject of unemployment, Mr J. Rtoberts moved and Mr R. Semple seconded : “That this conference regrets the failure of the Government to redeem its promises to find work, for the unemployed and to pay the minimum rate of 14s per day, and demand the immediate provision of employment for the abnormal number of men now unemployed ; further, thatlegislation should! he introduced: early in the next session enacting contributor) 7 unemployment insurance and the other recommendations unanimously agreed upon foy "fctio uti "fc ion til industrial conferenThis motion was discussed at length in the afternoon and evening and was carried. .
