ALLEGED THEFT. (Bv Teleffraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, March 20. James William Stewart, a fireman attached to the Thdrndon fire station, to-day. pleaded not guilty in the lower court to theft of a diamond ring valued at £lO and a camera valued at £3 ss. The ring was alleged to have been taken from a flat occupied by Mrs. E. A. Holding in Tinakori Hoad, when a fire took place in a room on the same floor, and the camera was alleged to have' been taken from the Kodak warehouse after a fire there. The accused was not present at the Kodak fire, but it was stated that he was engaged in cleaning up. Alternatively the accused was charged with receiving. After evidence had been given, the accused, who reserved his defence, was committed for trial, bail being allowed in one sum of £IOO. RAID ON CHINESE PREMISES. GISBORNE, March 20. The premises of a. Chinese market gardener were raided last night by Detective McLeod and two constables, who secured a small quantity ol opium and smoking utensils. Court proceedings were delayed owing to the absence of the medical officer of health, before whom the information must be sworn
