At last night’s meeting of the Okaiawa Football Club, an unanimous vote of thanks was passed to Air L. Houlahan for his past services as secretary. He was also voted an honorarium.

In returning thanks For his election as president of the Okaiawa Football Club last evening, Air A. Lees said ho had attained his “majority,” it being his twenty-first year in the position. The president was heartily applauded. Alessrs Kay-Stratton (Auckland) and Turnbull (Cambridge) are visiting Hawera and staying at -the Commercial Hotel.

Among the guests at the Central Hotel yesterday was Air J. Hussey, of Wanganui. Dame Nellie Alelba has taken a. flat in the fashionable Avenue Victor Hugo, a. Paris message. She says she intends to spend most of her time in Paris apart from the opera season in London.

Speaking at the banquet in his honour at Invercargill last night, Sir Joseph Ward announced that he had appointed Mr J. S, Hunter as assistant to the general manager of railways (Air H. H. Sterling) to take charge of the recently created Transport Department.

After a residence of some 6| years in Waverley as proprietor of the (Jlareudon Hotel. Air Stan Aloore was entertained at a smoke concert by a large number of friends and acquaintances in the supper room of the Town Hall on Friday evening, when presentations were made to the guest of the evening. Lieut. Eilson has received the Distinguished Flying Cross in recognition of piloting Sir Hubert Wilkins across the North Polo from Point Barrow to Spitsbergen, states a press message from Washington. Air. and Airs. W. J. Knell, of Greytown, and Aliss Knell (Wellington), have been on a visit to Opunake. Air i*.nell was at one time in charge of the Opunake branch of the Bank of New Zealand.

Air C. Newham, Government publicity photographer -of the Publicity Department, was in Hawera in connection with the gymkhana, and during his stay was a guest at the Egmont Hotel. Mr Newham left on his return by the mail train this morning.

Air John Houston, solicitor -to the South Taranaki Power Board, returned last night from Wellington, where he has been engaged on the board’s arbitration proceedings. He was accompanied. by Airs Houston.

At the annual meeting of the Okaiawa Football iClub last evening, the donors of medals for last season Messrs 11. Al. Kendall and W. A. Guy, were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The latter, and Air Lees, signified their intention to donate gold medals -this year to be allocated by the management committee.

Appreciation of the. good services rendered to the Hawera Golf Club was expressed at the -annual -meeting of members held last night to the retiring hon. secretary, Air E. P. Cox. The president (Mr W. O ’Ca-llaghan) and the captain referred to the great efficiency shown by Mr Cox in all his work. Mr Cox briefly acknowledged the compliment.

A large and sucessful gathering was tendered to the Hon. G. L. Anderson at Wyndham recently in recognition of the long and valuable political service rendered by him as member for the district and a Atinister of the Crown. Alany complimentary references were made to his, work, and the guest was presented with a. token of the esteem and gratitude of his supporters.

A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Air J. J. Daley, of Afanaia, W T as recorded by the Wainiate Rugby Football Club at its annual meeting last night. In proposing the motion the president (Air J. W. Paterson) referred to the long service rendered the club by Air Daley, who had been an outstanding player and had subsequently officiated as club selector. The motion was carried in silence.

•Prior to the commencement of business at the annual meeting of the Okaiawa Football Club last evening, the chairman referred to the loss sustained by the club in the deaths of Alessrs M. Roberts, W. Hackett and H. Crocker. Referring to the latter Air Lees said that the Crocker boys, as a family of players, laid the foundation of the Okaiawa team. A r otes of sympathy to the relatives of each were passed by all members standing, and the secretary was instructed to write to the relatives conveying the club’s condolences.

Dr. R. E. Bridge, son .of T. A. Bridge, Atannia, left Alanaia last Alonday morning en rente for Auckland to join the Uliimaroa for Alelbourne. Ho is to take up a scholarship granted through the Aledica.l Profession of_New Zealand bv the New Zealand Obstretrical Societv. by which he receives the benefit of ‘six * months’ residence m the largest gynaecological and Obstretrical Hospital in Alelbourne. The' appointment takes effect on Ist April, and he is the first candidate- to be chosen from New Zealand.
