JUDGE’S COMMENTS. The following are the comments of the judge (Mr. Reesy on the playing of the Hawera band in the three main performances: “The White Rider.” Opening with a good tone, hut to my estimation you are rather slow. At the fifth bar the release was not clean. Andante you play beautifully, but inclined to be slow. A nice euphonium (3). Onward very good indeed. Allegro smart, and X feel the fight^ lll U ie ® movement. Runs muddled. You incline to rush a little too much. Borne very fine ideas. F.Z. notes veil marke. Close beautifully. AndanteOpening very effective. Bass slightly untuneml. Flugel not too safe. You incline "to clrtig. I l lie comet did not fit nicely. Animato legato very well worked out; 14 onward, but you incline to dwell too much with this oeautirul tune, hifteenth liar should be restrained more. Recit. —A capital cornet. Flugei and horn weak. Fugue A food tempo evinced, but you get coarse. The band is_ P la - ym S very coarse here. Why? You have pioauced previously. Largomente YV ell defined in good style. Alla Marcia— A <>cod ponderous movement; just suits your band, but why play more legato as you go in ? This is still rejoicing, but you lose heart. Otherwise a well played movement. Fiu Vivo well worked up and a grand finale. You seem to have dragged your slow movements too much. A good tone band and highly creditable performance. Second Test, “Klubla Khan.” Not “together at opening. Cornets not in tii,' best of tune. You give me the right spirit if the tuning is closer. A nice close. Soprano very nice. liu lento: The playing is good, but you are not closely tuned. Annnando: Bass wobbly, and so are bass baritones. Religioso very effective. Animando: \ery good movement here. Just a little stir adds to your performance. Your greatest enemy is your tuning, ijeven: Very rough indeed. Largomente: Tuning very bad indeed. Lento . The accompaniment totally wrong.' You play triplets instead of semis. Andante: Cornet plays nicely and accompaniments are precise from eleven onward to end or movement. A good close. Molto agitato: This movement is the best you have played. You. produce good tone. Largamento very commendable. Close very good, in tune, and well 'sustained. Hymn Test, “Bethsaida.” A good tone produced. Opening not precise. A well-arranged tune. lhe soprano gives colour, Dfit you incline to marl:. Why should you do so? lour release displays some innges. You stay too long at the end of each \erse. lou lose the continuity or same; it is not so interesting. Katner a spasmodic performance; some parts very good, others not halt so interesting. Frecision is not satisfactory. One. coinet co atinually coming in before the band.
