TO BE DICTATOR
VENIZELOS’S AMBITION. THE STRONG MAN OF GREECE. SUPPORT OF PARLIAMENT. £ Australian Press Association —United Service.) Received 11.20 a.m. to-day. LONDON, Fell. 27. M. Venizelos is planning to be dictator of Greece, according to the “Daily Mail’s” special diplomatic correspondent after an investigation of the Greek situation on the spot. He discounts the suggetsion that dfferenees between M. Venizelos and King George of Greece are so composed that there is a likelihood of the exiled monarch ’s recall, and says that Venizelos is at present a stronger force in Greece than over. As long as he is alive the restoration of King George is out of the question. Venizelos coYistantlv protests to the contrary, but it is known that it his personal ambition to terminate .bis “otitieu.l career as president of the republic, in which capacity a man of his will and character would be virtually a dictator. It is significant that Royalist politicians who, before the election in August when Venizelos rolled back to power, described themselves as Royalists, now simply present themselves as “anti-Venizelists. ” Too correspondent adds: “The Venizelist ’Cabinet has the support of 90 per cent, of the Parliament. Venizelos himself, although sixty-five, seems to have taken a new lease of life and is at present working like a trojan to consolidate and .popularise the republic and thus make his own position invulnerable for the day when he -will become the King of the ■ Hellenes, but without a crown.”
