RAILWAY WORKS.
NORTH AUCKLAND PROPOSAL. (By Telegraph—Special to The Stax.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 31. In addition to the South Island and Wairoa-Gi sborne railway routes, which have to the inspected by the Ministers before the final decision is given regarding construction, another important work which was included! in the former Government’s railway _ improvement programme is under investigation. This is the Morningside deviation. of the Kaipara railway, leading from Auckland. The plan involves a long and expensive tunnel beneath the city. Suburban traffic developimlents in all parts would raise a! question, whetlhei* heavy outlay on the railway is desirable, though the deviation would save much time and onerating expense for through traffic to North! Auckland. It is understood to be 'an open question whether the new Government will r>'ithorise the expenditure at present. The position is to be closely investi-o-nted bv the Hon. "W. B. Taverner, Minister 0 f Railways, who nail shortly vidt Auckland!, accompanied by Mr H. H. Sterling, General Manager of Railways'.
