Prior to leaving for the Olympic Games, Standen signed a paper promising to return his expenses, amounting to about £360 in the event of his leaving the amateur ranks within two years. The alleged breach resulted in his suspension, which means lie will be debarred from competing as a professional cyclist in any part of the world during the period of suspension.
