A firm of London wine merchants has been fined £IOO and costs at the Old Bailey for selling white, sparkling wine under a false trade description. The prosecution alleged the wine was made here from French grape juice, which is imported duty free and artificially fermented. It was sold in champagne bottles labelled white l , dry, creaming Maison Bellet. The wholesale price was 38s a. dozen bottles. The duty on French champagne equals 31s a dozen, whereas the duty on British made wine is only 3s. Defendant’s counsel contended: that the labels and general get-up would not deceive anybody.
