LOCAL AND GENERAL.

A movement is on foot locally towards securing a petition for presentation to the Borough 'Council asking for a poll on the half-holiday question. Operations at the Patea Freezing Works arc proceeding at high pressure at present and a very large amount of stock is being received. On Friday a record was established When three thousand lambs were killed, thirty butchers each putting through his maximum tally of a hundred. Large crowds were at the various, beaches during the week-end and enjoyed- bathing in - the surf or in the river. At Ohawe Beach there was one of the largest crowds seen for a long time. The Life Saving Club teams were out and put in useful practices. They have a lifebuoy which will be located in ease of need at the swiming pool on the river.

A first Cabinet meeting of the new year lias been called by the Prime Minister for Thursday next, January 17. By that time, it- is expected -that all the Ministers will be in Wellington, and Sir Joseph Ward expects that all his colleagues will attend. It is anticipated that matters of policy will bo discussed. Apart from that a number of items of departmental importance are awaiting approval by Cabinet, and probably a series of meetings will be required to catch up on the arrears of documents needing attention. A Hawera resident who was spending the week-end fishing for eels in the Waingongoro River at Eltham noticed a large eel with something protruding from its mouth. On being caught, it was found that the eel 1 had attempted to swallow a trout fully 12 inches in length. Another eel caught during the day, on being opened, was found to contain the -complete, isikdiefon of a fair-sized trout. The recently-formed eel clubs in the district should, in the face of these discoveries, prove a groat boon to the various acclimatisation societies throughout Taranaki.
