I'HEi MONTH’S -ACTIVITIES
MEETI NG OF; THE BOARD
Tlie usual monthly meeting ol the Opunake Harbour Hoard was Jield last evening when the following members were present: Messrs T. if. Hugh son (chairman), O. A. Trotter, J. A. Pettigrew, H. Young, J. S. Tqsland. T. H. H. Sinclair, and JEt.. C. Watson. The chairman reported that he had visited the harbour several times during the holidays, but all the men had stopped work. There had been line weather, the sea having been , very smooth, so- that diving oould have' been pushed on had the men been available. Good work had been done by the member of the board’s staff who- was acting as diver, and a lot of stone had been gathered. The use of the pneumatic drill was proving very satisfactory. Messrs Xshenvood, Ilellam and Co., contractors, notified that they found the board’s terms as regarded moving stone from near the mole on the northern sideutterly impossible anti unreasonable and they had accordingly instructed their sub-contract-ors- to cease operations. , J Mr Pettigrew said that- the contractors had the letter from the hoard for their authority before they started work, and the board should therefore ask them to put tlie road in good repair. However, as they had not completed taking the metal he thought the board might meet the contractors by waiving the clause calling on the contractor to grade the road from the beach. A resolution t.o this effect was carried on the motion of Messrs Pettigrew and Sinclair. There were six applicants for the position of -secretary', harbourmaster and wharfinger to the board, and the special committee reported having interviewed four of them. The board went into committee to discuss the matter and on resuming it was reported that the recoihmendation of the committee that Mr A. G. Hardy. New Plymouth, be appointed at a -salary of £-40 pei annum and accommodation had been confirmed. 'lt was also, resolved to set np a committee comprising the_ chanman, Messrs J. A. Pettigrew and I. H. 11. Sinclair, with power to act, to. -ai-rano-e for temporary office accommodatioip also for permanent accommodation at a cost not to exceed £SOO. It was resolved to take steps to collect the rates.
