SCHOOL YEAR ENDS. DISPERSAL FOR VACATION
! The breaking-up ceremony of the I Auroa school took place on Thursday afternoon. After holding a general school sports programme on the grounds the pupils were assembled to receive certificates and trophies won during the year. Mr. T. Kilpatrick (chairman) addressed the children and presented the following: Proficiency Certificates.—James Biclieno, John Hartley, Gladys Bigham, Margaret Lilley, Eunice Lyndon, Moira Mundy, Una West. Good Attendance Certificates.—Margaret Lilley, Eunice Mellor, Bernard Mellor, Melville White, James Bicheno (this being the fifth year in which the latter boy has made full attendance). A silver cup and agricultural club medal was presented to Alfred Muggeridge as the second prize trophy for South Taranaki and winner of his group in the mangold growing competition of this year. During the year the school had been successful in all branches of school life, said the chairman. Practically all the children bad been promoted; all standard VI had gained their proficiency certificates, excepting one pupil who had been recently enrolled. The boys and girls had held their own at- foot- ; ball and basket-ball and other games, while the agricultural club work was a feature of the school. COMBINED SHOW.
The annual meeting of delegates representing the Auroa, Awatuna, Otakeho, Riverlea, and Te Kiri farmers’ show committees was held at the Auroa Hall on Thursday evening, there being about ten delegates present. Mr. F. Area, as last year’s chairman, presided.
The secretary (Mr. E. L. Bigham) presented the balance-sheet, showing a credit of £8 18s Id over the working for the year. , In moving its adoption Mr. F. Area stated that a good start had been made with the champion show, and the prospects seemed better for future shows now that funds were in hand. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: Chairman, Mr. H. Wood (Otakeho); lion, secretary, Mr. E. L. Bigham; auditor, Mr. R. Muggeridge. The usual delegates will form the committee. After considerable discussion it was agreed that the same programme as last year be adopted for the cattle classes and that the horse classes be: left in abeyance. The secretary was instructed to write to Mr. Guy Bell to ascertain if he would accept the position of judge. It was decided to issue tickets to competitors and to present trophies instead of cash prizes to the winners at the show.
The secretary was instructed to express thanks to Messrs T. C. List and E. C. Griffiths for their donations to the show funds and to ask for assistl anee from local dairy companies and others interested with show work. March 2 was tentatively chosen as the date of the next show, and a number of conditions were revised, providing that exhibitors have a free: hand regarding tile preparation of show animals, all milch cows to be milked on the morning preceding the show, and all of the latter to be calved not later than the end of December. Regarding other details, similar arrangements and conditions as last year will be continued. A further meeting will be held on January 30 to .make final decisions and place other officers.
