LOCAL AND GENERAL.
To-morrow, marks- the tenth anniversary of the- signing of the Armistice which terminated the Great War. The two- minutes’ isiicnce will be observed in the churches and elsewhere at 11 a.m.
On Wednesday afternoon there were twenty ladies of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union present at the monthly meeting at Auroa. Sister Corkill, of New Plymouth gave an interesting address. Afternoon tea was provided by Mesdames Lyndon and Johnstone. Next month Sister Ingles, of New Plymouth, will continue the lectures and will give an address .on children’s ailments in general. Sister Corkill has finished her work in South Taranaki. Her work has been very much appreciated. On .account of to-morrow being Armistice Day, the service at the Church of Christ in the morning will commence at 10.45 o ? clock. The evening subject will be a very interesting one. Pastor Daws will conduct both services. A burglary occurred, at Bit ham last night, the premises of T. Towers, butcher. Bridge Street, was entered and a quantity of meat stolen, reports our correspondent. An attempt was also made to open the safe. An entrance to the premises wars made by the* back door being broken open. The annual meeting of the Ohawe Seaside Society is to be held on Tuesday, November 13, in the Borough Council Chambers, at 8 p.m. An important item will be tire consideration of the county council’s water and drainage proposal. The Hawera Borough Council, advises ratepayers that the time within which five per emit rebate on rates can he allowed expires on Saturday, 17th 1 inst. In order to facilitate matters and avoid congestion ( payment prior to last day will lie much appreciated. Tire office closes at noon on Saturday. , Owing to to-morrow being Armistice Day, St. John’s Presbyterian Church, Hawera, will commence the morning service at 10.45 o’clock, and will observe three minutes’ silence at 11 o’clock. A Press message from Sydney states that the heat wave continues, bush fires are widespread, and many homes are endangered. Women have been specially prominent in saving homesteads. Flight cottages have been destroyed in the Mittagong district, where parties totalling 300 fire-fighters were engaged all night long to. beat the flames off the town. A strong westerly gale broadcasted sparks everywhere, especially in the Blue Mountain district, where miles of country has been swept by fire. * The Sports candidate committee has arranged to hold a grand dance, euchre and bridge party on Thursday next at the Town Hall, Manaia, and everything .is being done to make the function a success. Good prizes will be given for euchre and Charleston dancing competition, and the rnusito to be supplied by Marsh’s orchestra will be of the best. Mr Woods has promised to run. a free bus from. Auroa via Otakebo that evening, starting about 7.30 ocloclc. The committee hopes the people of the district will roll up on this occasion and help, isuch a good and deserving cause. ,
