ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS. MESSAGE ON BEHALF OF NEW ZEALAND. (Australian Pr.-ss Association —United Service 1 LONDON, Oct. 27. Among the mass- of wreaths placed without ceremony in drizzling rain upon Captain James Cook’s statue at Admiralty Arch were -the Commonwealth’s by Mr T. Trumble and- New Zealand’s by Sir Jamas Parr. “Hail Yorkshire from far New Zealand,’’ wired Sir James Parr in response to -a request from Saltburn in connection with the Captain Cook celebrations.

When Captain Cook landed on the beautiful -shores of New Zealand, the message- added, it was a land of mountain, forest, and lake, populated by fierce savages. Captain Cook planted •the English flag and made New Zealand British forever.

New Zealand to-day was perhaps- the most interesting, certainly the most fertile and productive of all the great Dominions. All this was due to a humbly-born Yorkshire lad who loved the beautiful new country he discovered.. Every New Zealander rev ores- Captain Cook as one of the greatest Englishmen.

The Captain Goolc bi-centenary was marked by a great gathering in Hyde Park, centred upon the -Cook statue. A naval party and the Boy iScouts participated. The speakers included the Lieut-Governor (Sir William Ullcn), the -Chief Justice (the Hon. R. W. Street), the Attorney-General (‘the ITon. F. G. Boyce) and Sir Joseph Carr others.

EXCURSION TO SHIP COVE. ADDITIONS TO MEMORIAL. fßy Telegraph—lresa Association.) BLENHEIM, Oct. 28. In commemoration of the bicentenary ■of Captain. Cook’s Birth, ain excursion was made to-day, under the auspices of the Captain Cook Memorial Committee, to Ship Cove, the favourite ha.ven of the famous navigator. Fifty people journeyed to the historic spot. M.r W. J. Girling represented the Government, and Mr J. Jones the port of Picton. Air R. G. Furness, president of the Cook Alemorial Committee, .was also' present. The first part of the proceeding was the unveiling of 'two- canmons of Cook’s period presented by the British Admiralty. These have been placed in position at the base- of the monument erecte.d'at the Cove. The ceremony was performed by Air Girling, speeches also being delivered by Air Jones and Air Furness. The latter made interesting references to links in the chain starting from the discovery of New Zealand by Abel Tasman to the present day.
