MELBOURNE. Oct. 18
Wharf labcureivs to-day struggled in a. queue to obtain licenses tor employment which were issued at a terrific rate ait the Customs House. No. unionists,- however, were employed to-day to wont general cargo, the shipping representatives making it clear that volunteer*, were to have preference. The owners further announced that they intended to retain all the volunteers who wished' to remain, whether a.s seamen or as wlianmen.
The owners are now preparing to recommission the id e passenger sitiipu and union wharfmen will be* Itieely picked up next week. The Victorian seaman to-day decided to favour resumption of work after severely criticising ‘the wharfmen for giving up the fignt ‘before there was any need.” A red flag bearing the words “No Surrender” is flying .from the building 1 which houses the Port Phillip Stevedores’ Association at Port Me-bourne.
Special police were posted l ait all the wharves, but there were no disturbances as expected when the rush by union wharfmen for licenses took pflaoe to-day. Officially the strike i« still on, but actually tl’ne dispute locality has ended.
