KAKARAMEA

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

Tlio annual meeting of the Croquet Club was held in the Kakaraanea Hail on October 5, when a fair number were present, Mrs P. W. Tong (president) being in the chair. The report and bal-ance-sheet were read and adopted, the latter showing a credit 'balance. The election of officers resulted in Mrs Tong being elected president, Mrs Tarrant vice-president, and Mrs Meharry secretary and treasurer. The subscription for the ensuing year was fixed at 10s, with a. reduction for two or more members of one family. During the year a new court has been made, is looking well and promises to be much better than the court used hist year

The young people of the district are anxious to form a. tennis club, and as there is room for a court beside the croquet court, a meeting of tennis enthusiasts is being held on Thursday next to go thoroughly into the matter.

In common with the rest of Taranaki this district has had a lot of heavy and continuous wind, which has militated against the milk supply, which is considerably behind what it was this time last year. On Monday night the district was visited by a violent thunderstorm, the heavy peals of thunder made the windows rattle, and the lightning was veiy vivid. At 'Mr Carmichael’s a fir tree was stripped of a width of bark from top to bottom, a window in the house was broken and the telephone put out of action. With every flash of lightning the telephone bell in your correspondent’s house would ring, but the ’phone was not put out of order. The electric light in several houses, however, failed for the time being. Much comment was expressed at the peculiar appearance of the clouds all the afternoon; at times it was very dark, no doubt the Australian dust storm being responsible.
