CAPTAIN COOK.
FIRST LANDING IN NEW ZEALAND ANNIVERSARY AT GISBORNE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) GISBORNE, Oct. 8. Representatives- of public bodies and a large gathering of the public attended at the Cook m-elnorial on Haiti Beach yetserda-y afternoon to celebrate: the 159th anniversary of the landing of Captain James Cook. A short religious service was held', followed by speeches honouring the great navigator, and wreaths were placed on the monument. Reference was made to the fact that the ceremony was taking place on the actual: site- where Captain Cook first set foot on New Zealand soil. Mr J. R. Kirk, who presided, read a message from the chairman and council of the Royal Colonial Institute, associating themselves with the honour paid to- the memory of Captain Cook. He also read messages from- 'the Prim© Minister (the lit. Hon. J. G. Coates), the Hon. Iv. S. ’Williams and the Returned Soldiers’ Association. A -stirring address was delivered by Dr. McIlraith.
