ESCAPED FROM CUSTODY. (By Telegraph—Preae Association.) Lowry, who escaped, from Wi Tako Prison, at Trentham, on August 29, and who was recaptured on Friday, said that his escape was unpremeditated. It was done on the impulse of the moment, he told 'the magistrate to-day. “I had a chance of escape and 1 took it. He was going out with a. working party and complained of sore feet and was giving the privilege of taking a short cut. Bush was handy and he took to it. While at large he committed a burglary for food and clothing. He will now serve an additional three months. MOTORIST FINED £lO. PALMERSTON N., Oct. 8. A -fine of £lO and costs was imposed on Harold William Hardie, of Bunnythrope, by Mr Stout, 8.M., to-day, for driving a car while intoxicated. The defendant’s license was ordered to be endorsed. A charge of negligent driving was dismissed, the evidence being held to be inconclusive. ALLEGED FAILURE TO ACCOUNT. WHANGAREI. Oct. 8. F. W. Webster, whose name has twice been previously Kuppies-sed by justices, appeared on remand before the magistrate, Mr Lux.ford, at the Court to-day, and was charged with failing to account for £235, the property of the Whanga-re-i Terminating Building Society. Suppression of the publication of the accused’s name was refused. The accused was remanded for a week on his own sureties, of £250. The senior sergeant stated that there were further counts pending involving approximately £I4OO.

TOO MUCH SALT IN BEER. PALMERSTON N., Oct. 8. The Tui Brewery Co., Mangatainoka, pleaded guilty to a charge of having an excessive amount of salt in a sample of beer which was analysed, the defendants being unable to account for the extra 15 grains per gallon. The Crown solicitor said that the company was warned last year. Mr. Stout, S.M., imposed a fine of £5 and cost's.
