There were many patches of loose’ shingle, with clouds of dust rising on parts of the road bo tv een Ashburton and Christchurch. The limit men got away sharp to time at 9.5 a.m., and it was 3.25 when the winner entered the show ground to the accompaniment of a burst of cheering. The winner was B. W. Arnst, who Won the big amateur road race last Saturday, but was disqualified for allegedly accepting motor pace. To-day lie could find no one who would ride fast enough to please him, and for practically the whole journey he rode alone. He is a young rider who should lie heard of as liis famous uncles, Jack and Dick Arnst, were in their day. The fastest time was made' by S. W. McCann (New Plymouth), who, like Arnst, had to make his own pace. Turning into Lincoln Road, he showed an amazing burst- of speed of. 27 mijes an hour to ride in alone in fifth place.
