GUIDES AT MOKOIA.
FIRST ANNUAL REPORT. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The annual meeting of the Mokoia branch of tiie Girl Guide movement was held recently, ’when, a good muster of ladies attended. Mris. D, S., Richardson presided. Mrs. G. H. Quinn (.secretary) submitted the balancesheet, which showed the affairs to be in a satisfactory state financially. In presenting the first annual report the chairman stated inter alia that in June of last year it had been decided bo form a company Of Guides, and nt'teen ladies present at the inaugural meeting were appointed to the executive with Miss Lysaght as president, Mrs. D. S. Richardson as chairwoman, and Mrs. G. H. Quinn as honorary secretary. Miss 11. Hawken was appointed captain, and Mrs. H. H. Legge as Brown Owl. In August the first enrolling ceremony was held. During the year the following ladies and gentlemen had acted as examiners to enable Guides to qualify .for their badges: Needlework and knitting, Mrs. Neithe: music, Mrs. Morrieson, A.T.C.L.; laundry work, Mrs. A Agostinelli; cooking, Mrs. Quinn; land worker and dairy maid, Mr. D. i F. Bell; swimming, Mr. T. Sineaton. ‘The committee are grateful to the.su ladies and gentlemen for tliei.” ldf in this respect,” continued tl— import. “\\ r e regret losing several oil our members through removal from the district. In August of this year the company’s first birthday was cele-. brated, to which the Boy Scouts and parents were invited. “I would like to thank all who have helped in. so many ways —the parents for the interest they have shown, the hall committee for use of hall, and Messrs Bell. Marsh, Main and Richardson for conveying Guides to and from Greenmeadows camp. We. would specially thank Captain Miss Hawken and the Brown Owl, Mrs. H. Legge, lor the time and trouble they devote to the Guides and Brownies. Mrs. Quinn also, as secretary, has had a lot of hard work, and much of the success is due to her efforts.” The receipts for the year amounted to £3O 2s, and the expenditure £25 Os 4d, leaving a. credit balance of £5 Is Bd.
Captain Miss Ruth Hawken presented tiie company report, which stated, inter alia: “The Mokoia Girl Guides company was formed in August, 1927, when the acting captain. Brown Owl and five Guides were enrolled. .Later six more Guides were enrolled. Two Guides have left the company during the year and three have joined. Nine second-class badges and twenty-three proficiency badges have been won during the year. Several members of the company exhibited at the Guide flower
show in Hawera. The company’s thanks is due to .Mrs. Lovell for kindly instructing the Guides in decorations. The captain and seven Guides attended the Guide camp at Opunake in January, On Anzac Day the Guides attended the parade and memorial service in Hawera. On June i. 5 tli© Guides attended parade in 'Hawera and were inspected by their Excellencies Sir Charles and Lady Alice Fergusson, and atterwards attended the official reception at the Opera House.
“Our first birthday party was held in the hall on, August 17 this year. The company’s thanks are due to the members of the executive, who worked so hard to make tliei# party a success. The company took the opportunity of showing appreciation of the help given them, by tbe secretary of the committee, Mrs. Quinn, and Mrs. Richardson by asking them to accept a small bouquet each. The company also desires to express its thanks to all those who have' by presentations and donations helped to make the first year so successful.”
• The list of the badges won during the year is as follows: Needlewoman, Jean Lander, Ethel Lander, and Cleo Quinn; knitters, Cleo. Quinn, Jean and Ethel Lander; dairymaids, Cleo. Quinn,- Jean and Ethel Lander; laundress, Jean and Ethel Lander, Cleo. Quinn, Una Sineaton, and Marguerite Legge; cooks, Cleo. Quinn, Una Sineaton, Marguerite Legge, Jean and Ethel Lander; thrift, Jean and Ethel Lander and Minnie Smith; land workers, Jean Lander; minstrels, Jean Lander; musicians, Jean Lander. The officers of the executive are the same as last year.
