MOKOIA BOY SCOUTS.

’ YEAR’S WORK REVIEWED. (From Our Own Correspondent). At the annual meeting of. the Boy Scouts’ Committee there was a very meagre attendance, but this may 'have been owing to the ,rough weather ex per ie lived and not to a ivanuig interest on t-lie part or parents. Mr Kibblewhite and Mr J. Dobson were present from Whakamara. In presenting the second annual report and balance-sheet, Mr S. J. Tidswell (chairman of the committee) gave a detailed account of the year’s operations, which, lie said, had been marked by hard work and- successful results, i'no cubs, under Cub master R. Forbes, hud ‘attended tire January camp, at .L’atea and at Easter nine Scouts, with Assistant Scoutmaster G. Landers, went into camp at Manaia with Scoutmaster N. Cowie. The troop had been well represented at the district sports at Haworn on June 4, and at Straltford the troop represe n tat Lve s took the Hillock cun for ambulance work. Badges issued during the year consisted of 4 Kings’ Scouts, 5 First-class, 2 if ,1-roand cords, 7 cyclists , 7 ambulance, 6 horsemen’s, 3 dairymen’s, 7 swimmers. 4 aiflilstevs, 2 signallers’ and 12 service stars.

Thanks or the committee for assistance in training, and examination were expressed to Messrs G. Quinn and S. J. T ids well, (swimming), G. Cooper and R. Phi 11 ipe'(liar s emanship), R. A. R.ichtor, E. F. Nickel, H. H. Legge, li. Phillips (athletics). A. T. Main (eyeing), S. J. Tidswell (dairying) and Shepherd (ambulance). Mr T. E. Bickford was waiting at present .to take the boys in fanning, friendship to animals and horsemanship courses and several boys' wore still to be coached in dairying. At the beginning of the year the organism, on consisted of a scoutmaster, an assistant scoutmaster and 13 scouts ; a cub mas ter arid 11 cubs. Four .scouts and one cub joined and one cub was promoted during the year, while nine scouts and one cub left the district. Mr R. Forbes had been appointed cubmaster in place of Mr Daley, who had resigned. Tiie committee regretted the toss- of Mr R. A. Richter’s services as .secretary, and had conveyed appreciation by letter of his excellent work. Sincrj May 9 Mr T. Percy had .fulfilled the duties with credit as Mr Richter’s successor.

Expenditure during the year had been light and a small credit balance remained. A Red Cross outfit, uniforms and badges comprised the principal items of expenditure. Owing to the reduction of the troop strength, ,Scoutmaster Cowie’s scheme of gardening as a means of raising funds had to be suspended. though offers of land were made bv Messrs C. Ritchie and H. Legge and seed potatoes were also offered.

A cup. to be known as the “Phillips Challenge Cup,” for annual .competition between the Guides .and Scouts, had been presented by Mrs Phillips prior to her departure from the district, while another trophy, to be known as the ‘‘Phillips Bros.’ Cup.” had been presented bv Scouts Bert and Ernest Phillips for annual competition among the scouts in Rod Cross work.

Making special mention of the services rendered by Scoutmaster Covvie, the chairman concluded by expressing thanks to all who had assisted in the troop activities during the year, and to district residents who had afforded the use of cars.

A further report was submitted by Assistant Scoutmaster G. Lander, who covered the work of the troop, a.si already outlined by the chairman, and explained that parades had been well attended during the finst .ten months, but .in the filial two. parades had (been abandoned, mainly as a. result of a number of Scouts having left the district.

Mr N. C. Cowie. who has boon scoutmaster' since, the inception of the movement, intimated his desire to resign in order to help elsewhere. It was decided to place on record the thanks and 1 appreciation of ' the committee for the fine work carried out by Mr Cowie. Eulogistic reference® were made bv .several speakers conosrninig Mr Cowie’s untiring and! unselfish interest.

It wan mentioned by Mr Kibble white that six or seven boys would be joining at Whakamara, and he would arrange to train them, in conjunction with the local trooo.
