The residents; of PUmmei'ton, a small township near tire entrance of Porirua Harbour, have petitioned to be constituted a town Board. The Hurt County Ooimcdll opposed the petition and a. commission was appointed, which has now reported that the time was not opportune for £t ohang© and tfaat- fen© petition should not be granted. W.C.T.U. AIEETXNG. PAHIATUA, Sept. 20. The Afanawatu district union convention of the W.C.T.U. was held here, there being a good number of delegates present. Miss Ferguson was re-elected president, Mrs. .Wakeham was elected ooresponding secretary and Miss Singh was elected treasurer All belong to Palmerston North. Several remits were drawn up for submission to the annual Dominion convention. REFORM CANDIDATE FOR AUCKLAND WEST. AUCKLAND, Sept. 20. Mr. Frank Adeane has been accepted as the Reform Party’s candidate for Auckland West. He was horn at Gisborne, and has been a .resident of Ponsonby almost, all his life. He is largely interested in spout, friendly society work and musical and elocutionary competitions. CASE SETTLED OUT OF COURT. WELLINGTON. Sept. 20. A case in which C. R. Dean, a fanner of Mawngatorutari. near Gambrkhre. claimed £5456 compensation from the Cambridge porrongh Council for land taken and loss of water under the Public; Works Act, in connection noth the borough water supply scheme was set down for hearing before Mr Justice Blair this morning. It lias been settled on mutual agreement. The terms of the agreement are that the borough council should pav Dean £llOO in full compensation, and each party to pay their own expenses.
