NEW ZEALAND v. N.S.W. WON BY HOME SIDE i GAME PLAYED AT VERY FAST PACE. (By Telegraplr— Pres* Association.) WELLINGTON, Sept, 5. About 15,0>>t> persons saw New Zealand win the first test to-day from New South Wales, under ideal conditions, by 15 points to 12 (four penalty goals and one unconverted try to three unconverted tries and a- penalty goal). Among those present were the Gover-nor-General and the Prime Minister. New South Wales kicked off against a slight wind, and within two minutes New Zealand .compelled them to force. New South Wales defended hotly five yards from the line, and Smairl brilliantly cleared to past half-way. Smairl again dashed down the line, Cooke saving. New South Wales were playing .with great-dash, and White 1 go-aled five minutes after the start with a beautiful penalty. New South Wales 3 New Zealand <1 New South Wales wore throwing the ball about • freely, pursuing hustling tactics and collaring well. The passing on both sides was inclined to be wild. New South Wales were sound in defence, and were getting the ball from the serums. Bardsley was serving the; backs finely. McClvmont was playing a sound game, and Cooke again saved a dangerous Now South Wales passing rush. Porter was offside l , and gave New South Wales another chance, which White missed. A great penalty kick by Cooke gained 40 yards. Louden dashed down the field and scored, hut' a scrum was.ordered. Cooke booted to half-wav, but bad handling lost New Zealand a good <chance, plav returning to midfield. A forward rush gave New Zealand a five yards scrum. Awarded a free kick. Bradanovitch goaled. New South Wales 3 New Zealand 3 Porter took the play to the New South Wales 25, and the forwards carried on to the line, but the l defence cleared. Hook tried a not. and New South Wales forced. A hot attack by Cooke was stopped by New South Wales forcing. New Zealand were.now playing better. Cooke kicked out five yards from the New South Wales line, but New -South -.Wales cleared. Cooke again put out 10 yards from the New South Wales line. Playing desperately, New South Wales cleared past the 25 yards. Bradanovitch. with a good run. cut in and sent to Hook, and to McClvmont. who held near the line. From a serum on the .line Westfield cleared past half-way with a great line kick. Failure to take a pass by White lost New South .Wales a score. Loudon made a great- opening at- halfway. The hall passed through four backs, and Bosenblaum scored a great try. White missed with the kick. New South Wales fi ! New Zealand 3 A hot New Zealand attack was desperately held, and Bradanovitch missed a penalty. Offside play cost New South Wales 40 yards. Freitas snatched up and scored, but the try was disallowed. McClymont was next over, hut the ball was in touch in goal. -Smairl made a great run and scored, but New Zealand were given a free kick for obstruction. New Zealand made a great attack, and Cooke dramatically threw himself over the line, but was recalled for a. knockon. New South Wales attacked, and were nearly over. Half-time came with no further score. Tho pace throughout had been a cracker. Cooke was playing a dazzling game, both in defence and attack, and Porter was in the thick of it. On the resumption New South Wales worked down the line to within five yards from the goal, but Netv Zealand cleared to the 25 line. New -South Wales kept always on the hall and followed fast, giving New Zealand no freedom. A good kick by Cooke set New Zealand on the attack, and a passing rush ended in New South Wales territory, where from a free kick Brndnnovifoh goaled. Play was stopped, and a New [South Wales man went off injured. He returned later. Play became hard, with New Zealand attacking desperately for a period, New South \Vales saving by a free kick. New Zealand continued hard pressing tactics until Cooke cut in brilliantly and scored near the posts. Bradanovitch’s kick was charged down. New South Wales 12 New Zealand 12 New Zealand again attacked bv a passing rush to the New Sonth Wales line, and were awarded a free kick in front of the goal. Bradanovitch goaled. New Zealand 15 New South Wales 12 The New South Wales forwards pressed, ,but offside gave Bradanovitch! another easy chance, which he missed. A dangerous New South Wales passing rush was stopped by good tackling. Again New South Wales swung into the attack with a passing rush, hut they were obviously tiring. One of the backs got over, but was recalled. Eight, on time White missed with a penalty kick from half-way, the game ending : New Zealand ] 5 New South Wales 12 The pace was tremendous, but Now Soutli Wales were unable to keep it up. They had an abnormal number of free kicks given against them, and this was the decisive factor in their defeat. They were faster than the New Zealand team, and threw the ball about, finely, making the game open.

INTER-PROVINCIAL GAMES. SOUTHLAND DEFEATS OTAGO. SPLENDID EXHIBITION OF CODE. INVERCARGILL, Sept. 5. Played at Rugby Park under ideal weather conditions before an attend-: ante of 7000, the representative match; between Otago and Southland was pioductive of a splendid exhibition of football, the game ending by 15 to 11. The ground was in perfect order, and a, fast, exciting game was witnessed. Otago commenced well, leading an half - tiniiei by 8 to 3, but Southland rallied •in the second spell to win the game. The visitors gave a. fine display, while a. feature of the Southland play was ■the sound defence. Otago won the toss and played against the sun. For the first few minutes Otago hammered hand on the Southland line, the hooker iseonring the ball ;from the scrums on (several occasions' and giving the backs numerous chances. Bell temporarily cleaned and play centred at half-way far a time. Then Otago .returned. A series o!f lineouts followed, and then a pastsing rush by Otago brought the .visitors . outside Southland’is goal. .Ought-on c feared with: a. fine kick. A moment later :Donnelly accepted a mark, hut Otago failed' to take advantage. Southland, securing the ball, gained territory. Play swung back. On the resumption of play, Johnson whipped up the ball, losing it to recover it agiaiin. He was robbed again, but Bell obtained possession and passed to Johnson. Geddes could not pick the ball <up, Otago backs .fumbled, and J ohnson ■scored in a handy position just three minutes -after play had recommenced. Diack converted. In retaliation Otago attacked vigorously and Nicholson: passed to Stew-, art, who scored a- .splendid try. The kicked failed. Johnson ‘snapped up the ball. He passed! to Diack, who was run out. A sortie was made on Otago's goal, Diack figuring prominently, but Otago forced ii" the nick of time. From a. line-out at half-way .Bell initiated a Southland passing movement, which was broken. Southland- were then penalised, hut Nicholson missed with a. good kick. Fast play followed,.Johnson passing to Geddes, who ran. a -considerable distance before being btroiiiglit down.
