Mr. Chester, -speaking to a- Hawera Star” representative, said he had been pleased with the standard of tuition in New Zealand as reflected in 'the work of the candidates. Ha-we-ra- held its own well with other places, and he considered the work of the teachers very sound. He stressed the great asset* to any town of the musical atmosphere, and said that small towns generally were at a. disadvantage because that was difficult *t» get in small communities. The opportunity of hearing the greatest artiste of the world was also a wonderful help, and candidates should take every possible opportunity of hearing them, listening carefully, and studying their work and their methods. This was, he added, a real eductation for them. A school of music _or conservatorinm would, in his opinion, be very valuable to the cause of music in New Zealand. There: was plenty of talentin the candidates he had so far cxl amine-d. Tt- was. he said, a distinct. ; honour for a community of the- si ye of Hawera to have two L.A.B. candidates successful at- one examination.
