The Union Jack is being flown at the Hawera Post- Office to-day to celebrate the .Signing at Paris of tho treaty lo outlaw war.
Owing to the prevalence of motoraccidents, many of which are due to negligent driving, the New South Wales State Cabinet is considering an amendment of the Traffic Act providing for a fine of £IOO for drunken and careless drivers, also empowering magistrates to impose six months' gaol without the option of a fine. — Press "Association. A most successful shop day was held in Hawera on Saturday by the Ladies Guild of the Church of England, Otakeho, in aid of the funds of the church. The effort was organised under the direction of the bon. secretary (Mrs. E. R. Haistie), and was in every way satisfactory. Friends sent, in to the committee ample supplies of meat, produce, ■ fruit-, _ vegetables', etc , and selling l>egan with the opening of the shop. This continued briskly until all was sold. Mrs. Hastie and several members of the league, were in attendance, and Rev. C. '~W. Solomon, vicar of the parish, and Mrs. Solomon were also present. Mrs. Clegg won the dinner, her guess being 500. The committee was very pleased at tho success attending their efforts.
The two tennis clubs, Mereniero and Ghangai, united in holding an annual dance at the Ohangai Hall on Friday. There Was a good attendance and all had a capital evening. The music was provided by Butler’s 'Orchestra and the M’sjC. were Messrs A. Williams and Cunningham. Prizes were won for the Monte Carlo by Mr M. Owen and partner and for the spot waltz iby Mr G. Wallace and partner. Extras were played by Mrs Haycock and Mr Handford, while the -supper was supplied bv Mrs Hod die.
A movement to make Whangairei a. coal 'bunkering port was advanced another step on night, when the chairmen of all t'he local bodies l , in the district passed a resolution urging the Minister of Railway® to- place 100 Q waggons, on the North Auckland .railway for the transportation of coal where required. An influential deputation -was appointed to accompany the member for the district when waiting on the Minister. A letter received by the harbour hoard from overseas shipping interests at Auckland .chewed that as soon, as facilities were provided ‘ships would lie taken to bunker at Whangairei. Tine coal supplies are of great extent. —Pres? Association.
