TRANSPORT OF CALVES.
EFFORTS TO PREVENT SUF-
BERING
Qwing to the complaints received as to tlie alleged ill-treatment of bobby calves-, the Taranaki Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals have instructed their inspector to examine all complaints and to keep a close watch on the system, of transportation of bobby calves and to institute prosecutions where the facts would seem to justify it (states a communication from the society). Farmers and carriers should note that it is illegal to transport a. calf less than three days old. In some cases calves not more than a day old have been sold and sent to the freezing woks. The chief ground of complaint is . that of overcrowding. For the infoij- \ mation of carriers it is notified that a conference was held in New Plymouth this week, at which were present Mr. Dickie, the manager of the Patea Freezing Works; Mr. Allen, the. manager of the Waitn-ra Freezing Works; Mr. Wood, veterinary surgeon; Mr. Tippens, the inspector for the society; Mr. Ronald Qiiilliam, solicitor for the societv; and the solicitors representing clients who were being prosecuted. At this conference was discussed the question of room srnce which should be allowed, for each calf. This was settled at 234 superficial inches. The floor. soace available in every vehicle mav therefore be ascertained by multiplyiner the length of the vehicle by its width-, showing the result in ipohes, and dividing by 234. The result would give the number of calves to be carried.
