STRATFORD RACING CLUB.

CLAIM FOR EXTRA PERMIT.

MEMBERS WANT MORE CONSIDERATION.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

STRATFORD, Aug. 15. At the annual meeting of the Stratford Racing Clluib 'last night Mr D l . J. Malone said, that members had hoped that when the allocation of permits was again in the hands o-f the- Racing Conference that Stratford’s claim lor an extra permit would receive more consideration, but tills was not so. When the matter was again before the conference he hoped that more- consideration would he given to other places than in the past. He urged that the conference -should consider the days already held by the -clluib- applying for the extra permit, the attendance at meetings as shown by the gate takings and of the country served. The question of suitable- appointments ais set out by the Racing Conference and. the Minister of Internal Affairs and the total-i-sator receipts. Taranaki’s claims had been seriously overlooked and the matter should be strongly brought before the authorities. Sir Edwin Mitclielson said that, the points in dispute by the Auckland Racin-g Club might be settled by a round- table conference, and if such a conference were held Mr Malone thought that Taranaki should be represented at it.,» Mr A. AV. Budge thought that the greatest drawback to granting an extra permit was the good financial position of the club. Mr A. Coleman -said that when the Gaming -Bill was last before- Parliament Stratford’s claims were disregarded and the permits given to clubs unable to use them. >\ Mr Malone said that it was regrettable that the representation of the province on the -conference had been reduced. There should be an united protest against the reduction', as racing was on the increase in Taranaki. The president. Air S-. Pitt- said that certain diubs in difficulties had the catch orv that Government -taxation was -strangling them. He held that there was -nothing in the cry, as public and horse owners paid the bulk of the tax. Certainly taxation was not s trangl ing the Stratford dub.
