Oar carriage was soon filled with enthusiasts, most of whom were women, and they talked football hard. One oil, these female bairrackers asked me if 1 was going to the match, and when I paid 1 was and asked if her team would 'win, she said, “You can bet your sweet Life they will. We’ve got Jack Elder ais umpire to-day, and that will stop Maryborough’s nonsense. He’s the fairest and best umpire in the world.” With a wink at Jack Elder, who wais, of course not recognised, I said, What if the Maryborough tpaan get him to favour them?” and Jack blushed when she said. “There is not enough money in Maryborough or. for the matter of that, in Victoria. to square Jack Elder.” An hour later the game began, and it had been ii.it proprpset about five minutes when right in front of the grandstand Elder gave a free-kick against a, Carisbrook man.
