The visiters’ forwards set a very hot- pace from the outset, hut Wanganui backs, countered with smart, nippy passing, and several threatening moves into the visitors’ territory resulted in a score by Tilley, who also converted. Beilis soon after made a- nice opening, and Tilley took advantage of it to cut in. He passed to Stanley, who scored at the Hag. Wauganui 8, Marlborough 0. A free kick went to the visitors, and Washington goaled from well out. Hard open play followed, Wanganui being penalised inside the visitors’ 25 for offside, when another score looked certain. The blues returned; to the attack and bustled the visitors, Another score was put on for Wanganui. Their half kept, feeding the backs well, and this gave the visitors’ backs some lively work defending. Se liter ley came off witli a broken collarbone, and Glennie replaced him. At half-time the score remained: Wanganui 11 Marlborough 3 Crump retired with an injured leg I early in the second spell, and 1-she.r- ---| wood replaced him. I’lay was very even, neither side having much advantage. Wanganui came with a. rush, and the forwards took play to near the goal line, where Mcßae mossed. The visitors carried; play over the goal line, where Washington was deliberately obstructed, and the referee awarded a try. Hodson converted. Wanganui 14, Marlborough 8. Aston brought off a beautiful save for the. visitors in the face of strong •oimposition. Stiver nearly scored for Wanganui, but was pushed out at the flag. From a scrum on the Wanganui line Beilis brought off a- fine save in a forward rush., and in the subsequent scramble on the line Wanganui were caught napping.
