ARBITRATION AWARDS
THE FARMING INDUSTRY.
FURTHER POSTPONEMENT. ANOTHER CONFERENCE ’ PROBABLE. (By Telegraph—Special to The Star.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 9. Country members of the Government Party who have been insistent on the necessity of amending the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act so as to relieve farming and allied industries of arbitration award restrictions have now’ come to the conclusion that this matter cannot be satisfactorily settled during the present session. They’ have accepted the Prime Minister’s suggestion that last year’s postponement Bill, holding up any further changes or extensions of awards in connection with agricultural and dairying activities until September 1, shall be extended till the same date in 1929.
It is suggested that the interval can be utilised to further consult all parties directly interested. Consequently it is expected that the Prime Minister will call another industrial conference of a representative character with the object* of submitting certain definite points for discussion and, if possible, agreement. It is thought that further approximation to a general agreement can be secured, but in any case Parliament will thus obtain a more definite lead from industrialists and farmers than was the case in connection with the last conference.
