JAPANESE SQUADRON.

SHIPS VISIT WELLINGTON

WELLINGTON, July 25. The Japanese warships Idzuma and Yakumo, which arrived to-day, can boast of longer service than those of any other navy. Both were 4n action in the RJusso-Japanese, war of 1904-5, and both were employed in the Great War.

The squadron is commanded l by Vice-Admiral Seizo Kobayashi. Prince Takamatsu, who is serving as a sub-lieutenant- on the Idzumo, is the younger brother of the Emperor of Japan. The two vessels carry about 1600 officers and meri. The squadron, which is on a lengthy cruise of the Pacific, will sail for. Auckland on Saturday.

By 9 o’clock the visiting Japanese vessel's had been berthed ait Pipitea "Wharf, Prince Takamitsu, brother of the Emperor of Japan, directing operations on the quarterdeck of the Ya.ku.mo, while the Xazumo was flying the pennant of Vice-Rdmiral Seiza Kobaysha, commander of the squadron. The Japanese Consul-General of Australia and New Zealand, Mr Tokuigawa, went aboard, after which official calls were commenced. Some of the men are being taken to the college football match this afternoon, while others are sight-seeing.
