A party which is camped on the eastern side of Lake Taupo reports that at 11.3!) a.m. on Thursday a magnifiicient shot from Ngauruhoe was observed. A few moments before the shot was noticed a. deep rumble was heard. The mountain had not been observed to be showing anv activity for some time previously. A member of the party familiar with the volcano said the column of smoke was larger than any he observed during last winter’s activity Later the eastern side of the cone was seen to be black where the debris bad covered the snow. Several residents at Taupo felt a slight earth tremor at the same time as the shot occurred. The weather lias since prevented any view of the mountain being obtained.
