HAWERA HOSPITAL.

MEETING OF BOARD

THE MONTH’S WORK

Members of the Hawera. Hospital Board present at the ordinary meeting ing held to-day were Messrs. J. S. McKay (chair), F. Gillanders, G. W. Tayler, A. L. Campbell, A. G. Larcom. E. A. Washer, J. J. Meldon, M. C. Crighton, T. A. Winks, and E. J. Gifford. The secretary (Mr. C. M. Haggett) was in attendance. MEDICAL SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT.

The medical superintendent (Dr. J. Cairney) reported that the number of patients in hospital on March 31 was 73, admitted 67, discharged or died 79, number remaining at June 30, 61; daily average occupied beds for June 65.1, for three preceding months 63.9, last year (same period) 57.4. X ray cases'were dealt with as follow: Hospital 17, private 6. Physio-therapeutic: Treatments during the month 270, an average of 12. Out-patients: Attended 12 and treatments given 87. MATRON’S REPORT.

The matron (Miss E. M. Nutsey) reported that Nurses M. Lash, Tregoweth. Spence, Clark, Hicks and Carter had passed in anatomy and physiology in order of merit. Nurse Hoddinott returned from leave on Juno 21. and Sister Brown and Nurse Henwood were now on leave. Nurse Nicholson commenced dutv as staff nurse on June 22, and Misses M. Poulter and N. Matoe were on three months’ pi‘obation, while Nurses O. Sorensen and T. Murdoch had resigned after completing their training. Five nurses will attend classes in invalid cookery, and apnlication has been made to the High School to arrange this class. Miss M. Carbis has forwarded an application to be put on the waiting list.

OLD PEOPLES HOME. Mrs. Laing (matron) reported that there were 21 inmates, four being in hospital at date, and all the rest keeping well. Donations were acknowledged .from St. Vincent de Paul Soeietv and Mr. C. Brown (books) and St. Mary’s Church (cakes). The Rangers gave an interesting entertainment during the month. FARM MANAGER,

The farm manager (Mr. H. J. Webber) reported that during the month milk supplied to hospital amounted to 476 gallons, valued at £35 14s, bacon (1601 b) at £9, pork £ls ss, vegetables £2 10s. .

GENERAL. The Finance Committee is to report fully on the rates of salaries for sisters. The secretary advised thaf the Minister had consented to the disposal for £SO of the old nurses’ -home annexe at the old hospital to Mr. W. J. Laurent, the conditions to be. that the money be paid at an early date, three months to be allowed for dismantling and removal, that the grounds be kept as tidy as possible and the back entrance'used-, that drainage, water, gas and electric services existing be disconnected by competent men, and that the site be cleaned up and debris removed.

A report of vacancies at present existing at Pukeora and Otaki sanatoria- and Queen Mary Hospital was received from the Health Department. The resignation of Nurses Murdoch and Sorenson was received wit}i regret. They have both completed their training.

The- Finance Committee (Messrs. McKay, Winks and Crigliton) reported that donations were gratefully received from Mr. A. It. Crawford (unconditional) £2 13s, and to Radio Fund £1 Is. It recommended that an additional svphonia should be purchased; the tender of the Egmont Box Company for totara hot water tranks was accepted; the secretary was instructed to write to the Electric Company in regard to their complaint in reference to the excessive number of lamps consumed; the roofing at the old hospital was examined and repairs authorised; the statement showing the financial position between the board and the District Friendly Societies’ Council was examined and ordered to be placed before the board. GENERAL. The tender of Mr. M. Barradougli for supplies of meat for the coming six months was accepted. The amount of £l3 10s 6d was received from the New Zealand Auto Cycle Union on account of maintenance fees for Mr. H,. Moiler. A statement of the position was .received in connection with the Friendfly Societies Association, showing that for the period from June 30, 1926, to September. 1927., there were total treatments given to the value of £2308 7s. receipts being £1474 and allowances £334 7s for the three months to December 31 1927 the amount was £5Ol 2s and to the 31st March, 1928, £576 11s 6d. The total fees front June 30, 1926, to 1 ’March 31, 1928, were £3OIB 14si Gd, and total cash -received £2048 8s 9d. The sum of £483 17s Sd was paid to other hospitals. Th-ei Inspector-General of Health wrote advising that in response to the board’s request Mr Fenton would visit Haweiro, about the middle of August to consult with them about Store systems and. maintenance costs. —It- was stated by the secretary in a letter that Ha-we-ia costs were higher than the average, and they were- anxious to bring them down if possible. Air Fenton will inspect and report on staffing and store systems. Messrs F. Gi Handers, Gifford and G. \Y. T’avler were appointed a- visiting 1 committee for th'e- month, to meet on the .second Monday of the month. The next meeting of the 'board will be held on Tuesday, August 21.
