From Our Own Correspondent.) CARNIVAL WEEK. A big: week in connection with the Opunake Catholic Queen Carnival was commenced on Monday, when a bazaar was opened in the local Town Hall. The evening’s attraction was the tug-o’-war tournament of which the first round results have been published. Stalls have been arranged around the hall for each candidate and have an attractive display of various articles for sale and arc in charge of the following ladies: — Opunake.—Mesdames R. J. Morris, E. Caigou, T. S. Hickey, F. Rowlands, C. Hurley and D. T. Leahy. Oaonul.—(Mesdames J. M. Edmonds, A. J. Brennan, J. Hickey, S. Feaver,

A. Pollock and Miss B. O’Borke. Pihama.—Miss J. O ’ißrien, Mesdames T. Mulligan, P. ‘S. Riley, T. Carey, J'. Bradley, and Mr F. Verry. 'The Pihama committee had charge of the supper room; those in charge (being Misses K. Fennell, N. Munro and Mrs' O. Ross, who had numerous helpers. Besides the stall a number of side-shows are being run and are in charge of Messrs C. Ferriek, L. Maeßeynolds, T. Quinn, and P. Two hill. The Pungarehu—Waien. and Bahotu committee did not have stalls, but run competitions. During the evening Brooker’s orchestra rendered an enjoyable programme of music.

A competition for a needlework 'cushion, on behalf of the Bahotu candidate, was won by Mr E. Duggan (Otakeho). TUiG-0 ’-WAR,

The following officials are in charge of the tug-o’-war tournament: Messrs N, Reardon (starter and judge), W. JR. Gmnson (time-keeper), and L. .MacReynolds, E. Hickey, A. M. Hickey, and M. O’Eorke (stewards). Mr N. Reardon was the organiser. The results of the second round in the light weight section which was pulled off on Tuesday night are as follows: — Winners.—Holiaia’s team were defeated by Arawhata by 5-Jin; Mata defeated Rahotu 'by ©Jin. Losers.—Awatuna defeated Te Kiri by 2-Jin; Inaha defeated Opunake by Sin. Kahui defeated “Die Hards” by 2Jin. iSome good pulls were witnessed during the evening, especially the Kahui v. “Die Hards,” which was very exciting and the decision was not reached until the last moment. The first round of a special contest for a prize of £lO was pulled last evening after the tournament’s second round had been decided: —.Arawhata defeated Te Kiri by -fin; Mata defeated Celtic by l'lin; Awatuni defeated Rahotu by 4-Jin; Kahui defeated “Die Hards” by sin. The heavy -weight section of the tournament begins to-morrow night, and the light weight section will again pull on Thursday. VOTING .CONTEST. The positions of the queen candidates up till 10 p.m. last night were:— Oaonui (Miss M. Taylor) .... 19,240 Rahotu (Miss K. Annis) 17,200 Pungarcliu (Miss L. Doyle) .. 16,080 Opunake Miss J.
