FOUR MEN ADMIT THEFT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 10. Four railway employees, named Ernest Alfred " Dobier, Thomas Charles Harris, James Herbert South, Cecil Leslie Howard, all shunters, pleaded guilty to-day to theft of goods in values ranging from 8s to £l9, the property of the department, and were remanded for sentence.
Counsel said tijua-t all the men bore excellent characters and the thefts were inexplicable. Howard was just on the point of getting a rise. South was a married man with five children. ILLICIT STILL DISCOVERED. , INVERCARGILL, July 10. For some time a considerable trade in illicit whisky has been carried on in Southland. As a result of a search at Awarua Bay, the police discovered an illicit still in a secluded spot_ The plant showed that operations had been conducted on an extensive scale. Several large casks of matured liquoT and others in various stages of fermenta'tion were seized. ' DAMAGED TYRES OF MOTOR-CARS HAMILTON, July 10. William James Brvdon, aged 34, a civil servant and well known in athletic and sports circles, was convicted by Mr. "Patterson, the Magistrate, this morning of stabbing the tyres of a motor-car owned by John Monk. Monk’s tyres, which had thrice previously been damaged, caused the police to set a. watch when the car was parked last Friday evening. Constable Harris gave evidence that he saw Brydon stab the tyres and found a pointed file in Brydon’s car. Tlie Magistrate imposed a fine of £2.
