TAUPO RAILWAY.
, WASTE OF PUBLIC MONEY. BAY OF PLENTY OBJECTION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) OPOTIKI, July 3. Great indignation has been created throughout the Bay of Plenty by the decision of the Government to immedi'ately commence tlie construction of the Rotorua-Taupo railway, it being considered that the present building of this line is uncalled for, and a waste of public money. On behalf of the Opotiki County Council, the chairman, Mr. J. H. Reid, dispatched the following telegram to itr. Coates:
‘‘County electors view with general dissatisfaction and disappointment the , Government’s decision to proceed with tlie railway from Rotorua to Taupo,; while the main East Coast railway be-‘ tween Taneatua and Opotiki remains uncompleted. In view of the assured revenue from the fertile settled land: between Taneatua and Opotiki, electors cannot understand the reason for the. Government’s delay, and urge-tliat iih- ,< mediate provision be made for this ex- . ' tension.”
It is understood that similar messages have been forwarded to the \l Prime Minister from the Opotiki Chamber of Commerce, tlie Farmers’ Union, the Borough Council, Whakatane County, Council, and the Bay of Plenty Development League, which represents every local body in the Bay of Plenty and Rotorua, - and includes the chambers of commerce
