NOTES AND COMMENTS

jJBy “Maecenas.”) Trainer J. T. Jamieson Jea\ T e>s for Sydney with a. team of 'horses on Friday next. * * * * * Itangitokiri was installed favourite for the. Te Kum^ Handicap at Ellerslie last Saturday, but be appeared to slip a hip in the race. 1 v * * it * * King Liu, artistically ridden by A. Tinker, won on tire heavy Id Her she course last Saturday, carrying eleven stone. It was a, good performance. ****** Both If. Heed and T. Green were riding at the Te Kuiti meeting;last Saturday, but neither improved their total.

The hack hurdles, seen out at EfHerslie Oast Saturday, were the poorest imaginable. Proof ol : this is disclosed in the fact that the' tap weight in the race could have been bought for 75 guineas. * * * * •* Of late Tinakoa has run a number of excellent races, but Saturday’s! win Was his first success for «, long time. * * * *

Thur.siby ran well at the recent Great Northern meeting and was installed favourite for the chief fiat event at Saturday’s Te Kuiti meeting. Although Thursby was not “placed” be ran a good race into fifth position.

Friday hist was a, boisterous day in Auckland, and Saturday morning was also bad, yet the northerners rolled out in large numbers for the Te Kuiti meeting. * •> -W TP *

Favoured with n fine day, the Te Kuiti; Baaing Club expected; a turnover of £40,000 for the opening day at .fillersfiie. When the weather looked unfavourable the worst was expected, yet over £14.001) went through the total isator. *»* * . * Star of the East won by a. dozen lengths last Saturday at Fjl.ler.slie, but viewing the race, it appeared as if the riders of the other competitors, thought there was another ,round to go‘. **•**» Royal Form: was heavily bandaged, when lie went out to race last. Saturday, land at no stage of the race was he going well. It certainly appears as if Royal Form has seen his best.

Tinker tried t-o win all the. way with Archeen at the To Kuiti meeting on Saturday, but the gelding weakened in the 'last hundred yards to be beaten into third! place. v * *

Te Ivoroke raced consistently at the recent meeting of the Auckland Racing Club and as the gelding had worked well since lie was well supported for Ills engagement last Saturday, but after running another good race, Te Ivoroke was narrowly beaten by Wail Her.

Ridden more patiently, O'din may have beaten Importer at Elienslie last Saturday. Odin was sired by the Eng-lish-bred Vaikyrian and as he is only four years old, he should yet improve. * « * * *

Pokorimu ran three excellent races at -the Great Northern meeting, and at Ellersllie (last Saturday was heavily supported for the Hunters’ Hurdles, but after running prominently for a mile and a half he retired. He lias evidently trained off. *'* * * *

Although Glenclowie failed to secure place money 'Hast Saturday, he raced well and as a matter of fact finished better than any of his opponents. Gileudowie’s owner says the gelding wild not go to Wellington this meeting. * * * * * On Saturday last Beau Cavalier again proved what a versatile gelding he is by beating a big field of hacks over a mile course, and more remarkable still was hist getting to the lead at the end of two furlongs. * * * « * Importer is well enough bred to win any rac-e in Australia, and when imported from England, it was expected that big handicaps would fail! to his credit, but such a failure has Importer ]>roved, that he .was (relegated to thet hunting field, and it was in this class he iron last Saturday. As lie was very well and had to be ridden out to win there was nothing to enthuse about over Imported’s success.
