; FIVE NOW PENDING. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, June 24. Of five Parliamentary by-elections now pending little interest is being displayed in those taking place in Epsom, Hoiborn and Hallam (Sheffield) owing In the substantial majorities by which Conservatives have held these seats in the past. In Halifax no election lias taken place for many years, Mr. J. H. Whitley, a Liberal, having secured an unopposed return ever since his appointment as Speaker of the House of Commons seven years ago. Three candidates are now contesting the seat. There are also three candidates for the seat at Carmarthen, which is rendered vacant, bv the elevation to the peerage of Lord Melchett, formerly Sir Alfred Mond, who was returned as a Libera! at the last, election, but later crossed the floor of the House.
