It was decided at the meeting of traffic inspectors at Stratford yesterday that in cases where private cars are engaged to pick up firemen on the way to a fire they must use a siren. This provision is to be rigidly, enforced, otherwise there would be a. grave danger to pedestrians owing to the high speed at which such vehicles travel on such occasions. The chairman deprecated the practice of motorists racing off to a fire in advance of the fire motor, to which preference should always be given. On Thursday evening next there will be a, Bibles Class tea tendered to Rev. M. A. Rvlbnrn, M.A., principal of the Khanai Boys’. High School, Punjab, India, at the Presbyterian Hall. Work on the new Baptist Church is progressing favourably, and to-mor-row at 2.30 p.ni. the foundation stone will be laid by Rev. F. 13. Harry, of Wellington. There will also be short addresses bv his Worship the Mayor and by Mr/ H. G. Dickie, M.P. Probably no audience outside Taranaki would appreciate iso fully and sympathetically the remark made by' a Taran aid. an yesterday’ when relating some of his experiences during a recent visit to Japa.ii. “It was,” he saild “a remarkable thing that though there was plenty of milk and butter at the hotels we never' saw a cow. We saw water buffalo in the paddy fields, but never a cow. Look here fellows L would have given a quid to have seen a good old cow —1 would really.” The earnestness of the speaker when deploring the lack of this “one little touch of home” brought down the bouse.

Specimens of the new silver coinage are already circulating in Auckland, although the issue was first made in England only three months ago (says tire "New Zealand Herald”). These coins have been introduced Ire immigrants and New Zealanders returning from England. The banks* have no immediate need to import silver coinage, as there is ample in New Zealand for .the country’s currency’ requirements. The new designs will therefore continue for some time to be somewhat rare. The most interesting feature of the new coinage is the inclusion of crown pieces, which have not been circulated during the reign of King George, or, in fact, since 1902, the year of King Edward’s coronation. So far as is known, no crowns of the new issue have yet reached New Zealand, nor is it* anticipated there will be any great demand for them for general use, although collectors will welcome them. At last night’s meeting of the board of governors of the Hawera Technical High. School the present system of teachers applying for employment was discussed at some length. One teacher who was recently appointed to the local staff has tendered his resignation to take up another appointment in another part of the Dominion. This was stated to be the result of applying for several positions at one and the same time, and dissatisfaction Avas expressed by member,s of the board at the inconvenience caused through teachers leaving one job to take up another on short notice. “It is not the fault of the teachers,” said one, member. “It is the fault - of the Department, The teachers are entitled to do the best they can foi themselves, but the system is wrong, and it As for the Education Department t 0 remedy the matter.”
