SENATOR CURTIS NOMINATED

A message from the convention hall states that a fairly colourless message of acceptance from Mr. Hoover was read to the delegates. It began: “1 am indebted to my country beyondi my power to repay. The message then stated: “I stand upon the platform adopted by the convention,” and promised to discuss it more fully later on. .He pledged himself to support national defence, economy in Government, and protection of the American worker, farmer and l businessman, and to uphold international ]>eace and the enforcement of domestic law. He concluded with a promise to uphold the traditions or -the Coolidge administration.

Mr. Curtis overnight became the outstanding vice-presidential nominee, although Mr. Fe.ss and a. former Governor Cox, of Massachusetts, were also prominently mentioned. Finally Senator Curtis, of Kansas, was nominated as vice-president. DEMOCRATS’ CONVENTION. FORECAST OF VOTES FOR GOVERNOR SMITH, Received 11.55 a.m. to-dav. WASHINGTON, June 15. According to the compilation of the United Press, delegate tabulations. Governor Smith' will go into the Democratic Convention with 646 delegates either instructed, pledged or listed definitely for him. Though uninstructed, Governor Smith’s strength will be increased by 26 when Kentucky’s votes are pledged to him. Governor Smith’s leaders claim that the total delegate strength is actually higher than the above figures, which are based on United Press reports of primary results where such results are clear cut. The Democratic nomination requires 734 votes. MESSAGES TO MR. HOOVER. THE PRESIDENT’S GOOD WISHES. Received! 1.15 a.m. to-day. NEW YORK, June 15. President Coolidge, when informed of Mr Hoover’s nomination, sent the following message: “You have been nominated for the most important -position in the world. Your great ability and wise experience will enable you to serve our. party and our country with marked distinction. I wish you all the success your heart could desire. May God continue to bestow upon yon power to do your duty.” Mrs Coolidge sent this message:— “The President and I send to you and vours our love and best wishes.”

As the Convention settled to business Senator Curtis’s nomination for the Vice-Presidency became more assured, for while he was acceptable to the agrarian areas, he was also, a staunch Coolidge 'supporter, having . voted against the McNary-Haugen. Bill.

Senator Borah nlamd him in nomination, and the Convention went mad with enthusiasm. Other names were immedip.ltelv withdrawn. Mr Hoover’s efforts to heal tihe wounds caused in the breasts of the farmers were successful. Senator Curtis was nominated bv 105 votes, and the first ballot of the' Convention was over.
