The allegation that he was offered £B6OO to vacate his seat so that Mr. T. G. Theodore might be enabled to enter the House of Representatives was denied to-day ;by Mr. W. G. Mahoney before the Royal Commission, which yesterday resumed its inquiries into the allegations of bribery in connection with tho Federal elections. Air. Mahoney explained that the money with which he paid for the hotel at Balmain was the proceeds of investments at the Melbourne Cup race meeting in 1926, when lie won between £3900 and £4009. He brought this money from Alelbourne in notes, which lie hid behind old Hansards in a bookcase <at his home. He kept the news of bis winnings to himself, because when a Labour man was known to have money “lug-biters” became very persistent.
