FOURTH GRADE.
HIGH SCHOOL A v. W AIM ATE. Hie last match of the first round in the- Soutn Taranaki fourth grade competition found the two unbeaten teams, High School A and Waimate, trying conclusions- at Manara. Ill© game was fairly even. The teams were:
Waimate. —Gulliver, Borrie, Street, Tamil, Hodge, Russell, Wilburn, Edwards, Hughes, Ivitt, Rei, N-uku, King, Hill. Shaw, High School A.—Wills, Nicholas, Ivippenberger, Pacey, Moore, Kehely, Evans. Guv, Barker, McDonald, Sturroek, Herbert, Paterson, Nolan. Waimate kicked off with the wind, and' the play was kept at midfield for some time, when a nice movement by High School took the game into Wainiate’s 25. From a free kick School 1 had a shot. McDonald made a good attempt, but the jvind beat him, tlie ball going wide. From the kick-out Waimate got going and carried the game to the Reds’ line, when Gulliver picked ui> from some loose play andi dived over. An interchange of kicks kept the game to the centre for some time, when the Blues were awarded a free kick. School saved by forcing. Waimate had slightly the best of things, their handling of the ball being better than their opponents. Half-time sounded with the scores:
Waimate 3 High School A 0 High School opened up the game in the second half by a solid rush, carrying play right to the opposing line. Guy. securing from a scramble near the line, dived over. McDonald added the extra points with a well-judged kick. High School 5, Waimate 3. Good play on both sides kept the game fairly even, aild the tackling was good, nobody getting far. An excellent movement by the Blues set the hacks in motion, and Edwards scored a try well out. Street missed with a difficult kick. 'Waimate G, High School 5. Waimate assailed the Reds’ line, hut from u line-out near the corner School cleared, play , going back to Waimtae’s 25. A free to School' gave a. chance for a goal, but- the shot went wide. Another free to the Reds shortly after availed nothing, and the Blues forced the game back to the opposing 25. A line-out gave School an advantage, the game going to the centre. Another free kick to Reds saw McDonald put the ball over. High School 8, Waimate 6. The game finished' soon after with no alteration in the scores. High School A ...\ .8 Waimate G Mr. C. Thurston refereed.
HIGH SCHOOL V. HAWERA. Ou tlie Hawera showgrounds the High School and Hawera club fourths contested an eight point draw. For the s’chool Micß'ae scored a try, which Hurley converted, while the latter added a penalty goal. The Hawera club s ore indicated slightly better attack. Two tries were registered by Gibson, one of which was converted by Philpott. Mr. A. E. Stevens was the referee. ATHLETIC v. KAPONGA. Playing at Hawera, the . Athletic fourths were fully extended in a fast game with Kaponga. but with the assistance of two penalties tcok the honours by 14 to 11. Kennedy and Smith, s.ored* for Athletic, Smith adding a' conversion and Kennedy two penalty goals. Kaponga’s' tally came from tries bv Benton (2) and Belli, one being converted by Kilpatrick. Mr. A. Morrison was the referee.
