CORRESPONDENCE.

A FARMER IN DEFENCE OF SIDEY TIME.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —J. notice, in your report of the iaist meeting of the South Taranaki provincial meeting of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union that its president, Mr E‘. Betts, stated that a man with a big herd would be a fooL to work on Sadey time. Apparently Mr Betts, like his .predecessor, wishes to gain notoriety by his outbursts on daylight saving. Now, Mr Editor, if Air Betts’ opinion is correct, and a wise one,. I must plead, guilty to his charge of .being a fool. In my opinion Mr Betts is only showing higi ignorance of the .actual position, as there are instances of several herds within, a reasonable radius of Hawera that have this season exceeded all previous records, though milked strictly on Sidey time, and those doing the work have expressed themselves as perfectly satisfied with the conditions. I, with the personal experience of close on thirty years dairying behind me, have no hesitation in stating that .in my opinion Sidey time is more suited to large herds than the smaller ones, as the benefit lies in the cows being milked early in the morning and out to grass before the dew goes off and permits them to be milked and out in the evening in' time to get .a good feed before dark. I think it up to Mr Betts either to prove that daylight saving is detrimental to the cow, or withdraw the statement that those who adopt the nrinoiple are fools. I am, etc., — ONE OF THE FOOLS.
