SOLDIERS’ CLUB SOCIALS.

SERIES CONTI N L EI)

POI’ULABITV WELL MAINTAINED

The Soldiers’ Club, Hawera, was the scene of another happy gathering on Wednesday evening, on the occasion of the second social of the winter series. Throughout the evening the chairman (Mr. Hector Briggs), the secretary (Mr. A. L. Palmer), and the other members of the social committee, kept the entertainment moving merrily. Card games of various descriptions, mixed billiards for lady and gentleman players, ping-pong and elocutionary anil musical items were again featured in a programme repelte with enjoyment. solos were contributed by Mrs. S. R. Veitch and Miss Ada White; Messrs Owen Cardston and J. Davidson Baxter rendered duets to the accompaniment of the lilting melody of Mr. Baxter’s guitar, and monologues were given by Mr. O. J. McFadyen, each item meeting with warm appreciation. The Rev. E. S, Emmitt, M.C., who as having been a chaplain during the Great AA'ar was announced as the second contender in the- “padre’® reminiscences” competition, was given a task in having to equal the standard set at the previous social by chaplain J. R.. Young, but proved irresistibly droll as a raconteur of anecdotes having a direct appeal to the “digger.” The adjudicator (Mr. J. Renwick) created further merriment with his diverting explanation of the award of points and his criticism. He earned vociferous applause with his final announcement that the two contestants concluded on even terms, and his invitation to the two chaplains to be- present at the next social for a joint investiture of decorations.

Thanks to those who had assisted with the entertainment of the guests, and to the general public for the support accorded, were voiced by the chairman, who also extended a further invitation to all interested to attend the next social.
