CHARGES REFUTED
MONEY FOR PERMITS. CANADIAN MIGRATION CASE. THE MINISTER’S DENIAL. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—KV ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—COPYRIGHT.) (AUSTRALIAN PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Received May 19 11.30 a.m. OTTAWA, May IS. The Hon. J. Egan, Minister of Immigration, refuted the graft charges in connection with immigration permits when giving evidence before the enquiry. He stated that of 3061 per mits issued, 2900 were sponsored by members of Parliament. None did so far gain and not one officer in the department received one cent. The department had discovered that attempts had been made to use bogus permits but not one had passed the officers. The matter was placed in the hands of the mounted police. One man was apprehended. He had received complaints of two instances where money had been taken for permits. .
