HAWERA BOY SCOUTS.
AWARDS OF MERIT. PRESENTED BY COMMISSIONER. East night at the 'Scout Hall, the Commissioner (Mr F. W.. Horner), with whom were associated Mr J. A. getty (chairman of Citizen’s Committee), Scoutmaster N. Cowie and Cubmaster Hitchcock, presented a large number of bades to Scouts as. awards of merit for good work during the year. He congratulated them all on their success and said that he hoped they would continue their interest in the work. It was good to see so many qualifying for promotion. He added that he was convinced the people of the town and district would be pleased to see the progress made because the training helped to make good citizens of the boys. Thanks were due to the Scout and Cub masters, and he hoped parents would encourage their boys to join. The chairman read an enthusiastic letter from Mr H. G. Dickie, M.P., enclosing a substantial donation, and re- , gretting that, although he strongly ap--1 proved of the work, business prevented him taking an active interest in the movement. • -The list of badges awarded was as below:' ' 4 ~ , ~ Tender Pad, Cubs G. Auld and D. Sage; first star, Cub A. Richards and Sixer M. Lane; second star, Sixer L. Spragg, L. Paice and G. Sage; P 1 ®" ficiency house orderlies, Leader G. Thomson, Sixer L. Spragg, P. Guise, ,G. Sage, A. Sorenson and L. Humphries; first aid, etc.. Leader G. Thomson, Sixers P. Guise, L. Spragg, L. Hawkins; athletics, Leader Thomson, _ Sixers Spragg, Guise, Sorensonii Hawkins; swimming, Leader G, Thomson; , guides, Leader Thomson, Sixers Page, Spragg, Hawkins and Sorenson; yearly star, Leader Thomson, Sixers Spragg, Paice, Rawson, Richards and Cub Evans. Songs' were given by Messrs J. Fraser, E. H. Piper and E. Brigg; recitations by Miss Evans, Scouts H. Piper and R. Muschamp; a piano solo by Scout J. Hey; and a musical dancing doll by Mr W. Barleyman. The accompaniments were played by Mr W. Barleyman, jun. A haka was given in great style by the Wolf Cubs. Supper was supplied by the ladies’ committee. The singing of the National Anthem and “Auld Lang Syne” concluded the function.
