SUPREME COURT.

NEW PLYMOUTH SITTINGS. SMITH GETS TWELVE MONTHS. At the Supreme Court at New Plymouth this morning before his Honour Mr. Justice- Reed, George Gravy Smith, found guilty of negligent driving and with being intoxicated while in charge, of a motor car, thereby causing the death of Milli-cent- Elizabeth llichter, was sentenced to 12 months’ hard -labour. His driver’s license was suspended for five years, and he was ordered to pay £4O towards the cost of the prosecution, in default a. further two mouths’ imprisonment. Harold Middleton Lee, for forging and uttering, was sentenced to five years’ probation. A prohibition order against accused was ordered to be in force during the term of probation. Accused was also ordered to make restitution of £l2 and to pay £6 6s costs of prosecution. John Harold William Tapp, for false pretences, was sentenced to 12 months’ reformative detention, to becumulative with sentence already being served.

A fancy dress ball will be held in the Manaia Town Hall on Wednesday, June 20, the event being arranged -by the Manaia Brass Band in aid of funds to obtain new.instruments. Boulton’s orchestra, will provide the music and there will be novelty dances and competitions with attractive prizes. Prizes will also- be given for the best fancy costumes.
