SEASON'S SERIES OPENED
A PADRE’S REMINISCENCES
A happy gathering of about 50 residents of the town and district was enthused by a highly enjoyable entertainment which marked the opening last evening of a series of socials to, be held during the winter months at the Soldiers’ Club, Hawera. A mixed billiards tourney, which attracted entries from 20 ladies and their partners, proved a popular feature, while auction bridge, euchre, and other card games found 1 many adherents, and exciting rallies were contended in table tennis competitions. Songs were rendered by Mrs. T. E. Sunderland, violin solos by Master Louis Fox, and anecdotes were recounted by Mr. D. McCormick. The risible faculties of the gathering were further aroused by the Rev. J. R. Young, who as a chaplain with che “gunners” during the Great War opened a series of reminiscences true to life from the experiences of chaplains during the four years’ struggle. Taking the characteristics ' of mules as the main theme of his story, the Rev. Voting sketched word pictures of diverting experiences in a manner which kept his auditors in a constant simmer of amusement.
In thanking the gathering for the supnort accorded the chairman of the Social Committee (Mr. Hector Briggs' extended a cordial invitation to all interested to attend future assemblies, and announced that the Rev. E. S. Emmitt, M.C.. had been requested to continue at the next serial the feature so pleasingly commenced hy the Rev. Mr. Young.
After sunper an informal dance programme- concluded the evening’s attractions.
